Hi Lai Buñag, welcome to LA Music Review! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

Hello! I’m Lai Buñag, a 21-year-old singer/songwriter from Laguna. I write songs since childhood. From simple poems that developed into reflective lyricism and catchy melodies. I started sharing my music on my YouTube channel in 2021. In April 2023, I released independently my first single, “Pagbaba ng mga Tala sa Lupa.”

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?

Released on September 29, 2023. They say to be loved is to be known. “You’ll Be Known” is a song written to give listeners a sense of comfort when they’re having a rough time knowing themselves or when they’re feeling empty. It’s a song about love and friendship; an assurance that no matter what, even when you’re lost in your head and struggling to know yourself, you’ll be known for who you are.

I wrote the song after talking to a friend who opened up and talked about being lost, hollow, and feeling as though losing oneself. At some point in our conversation, I sensed that my friend was holding things back so I said “You don’t have to lie to me” and the song started from there.

I want “You’ll Be Known” to be a reminder that even though you’re unsure and anxious about everything, I am (or the song) is here to listen to you and that you can be real. It’s also a nice thing that You’ll Be Known ended up becoming not just a song that tells, but also listens which I think is quite rare.

What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

I feel like deep down, we all know that there are people who will listen, and everywhere online, people tell you that they’ll listen. But the hard and often scary part is saying these things that bother you, even to your closest loved ones or even to yourself.

You’ll Be Known is not something that forces a lesson onto you that you should be reaching out to people who love you. It’s a gentle reminder that talks to you like a friend who says “Yeah, it is difficult and terrifying but whenever you’re ready, know that I’m here.”

What is your favorite part of this body of work?

The whole song is so personal to me, so it will always be special. But, if I had to choose a favorite, it’s “You won’t ever need to lie to me.” It’s at the beginning of the last chorus. It was the first line I ever wrote for the song and everything else just grew from it.

Any recent events/releases?

I recently released “You’ll Be Known (remix)” in collaboration with EDM artist HYMNOTIZE last November 10.
