Being an artist or songwriter today isnโ€™t an easy job.

The road hasnโ€™t been mapped out for us and itโ€™s not hard to get overwhelmed with all the daily impressions of the industry. If youโ€™re like me, without a team of professionals around you, you might need some advice on how to best navigate this crazy life weโ€™ve chosen.

โ— Number one, follow other artists on social media that are at the same level as you or slightly above. Pay attention to what they do, where they play, who they know and work with etc. Simply take notice of what they do and use that as industry advice. If theyโ€™re doing it, you can do it! Contact the same press or radio stations and see where it takes you.

โ— Surround yourself with people who are all more talented than you. It’s been said before but this one is very important for growth and development. You will automatically raise your skill level too.

โ— Stay active with your emails and DMs. Contact at least one new person, label, promotor, venue or manager per day. Youโ€™ll be surprised at the results.

โ— Actively use your social media outlet and follow trends. See whatโ€™s new. Keep up with the algorithms and new features. That will guarantee you more success with your followers and reach.

โ— Network! In person events and shows. Shake peoples hands, be out and about. Follow up with anyone you connect with. Steadily go to places you wanna play at to show them youโ€™re invested in this industry and their circuit of people. Even if you only shake one person’s hand that night, you never know what that one person might do for you and your career one day!

Itโ€™s a lot to manage and do all at once. It’s ok to not always to able to keep up.
Remember also that weโ€™re all human and itโ€™s okay to take a breather and stay in a night. Just keep your focus and determination and great things will happen!
