LA Music Review | Art, stories and advice
by Carley Varley

The best time to write a song is always when reflecting upon a situation.
When you are in the thick of it or processing something, it is good to write about the moment youโre in and youโll find the inspiration comes easily. I often write songs when I feel overwhelmed and I need an outlet for my stress, my songs are often emotional and very driven by how Iโm feeling at the time of writing them.
You can also write songs when you are happy, content, sad, songs are tailored to their writer and so however youโre feeling, the best time is write is anytime you feel compelled to. I often feel inspired after seeing a live music show too, seeing other people express their creativity will naturally make you feel more inspired and creative.
If you are often busy in the day and require quiet to focus, writing at night may be the best solution.
I often write at nice as everything is still and calm. I also write when I know no one is around to hear me trialling out new lyrics or playing on my instruments. The best time to write is also in an environment where you feel comfortable to write, I use to take my notepad to a forest and sit and write for hours. I also use to go into an empty hall to write too, the acoustics were amazing, and it was always quiet and the perfect place for writing.
Another good time to write is in the moment, always carrying a notepad or journal is something that I cannot recommend enough. You never know when inspiration will hit you, so itโs great to carry a notepad and make sure that when it does you write everything down, even if you think something doesnโt make sense. I have experience it lots of times where Iโve written something down and thought โIโll never use those lyricsโ and then years later they were exactly what I needed for a verse.
Writing songs is an amazing form of expression…
the best time to write is always when you feel the need to, it is like a compulsion. You just have to write about something after finding inspiration. I hope this helps you in finding the best time for you to write a song!
