LA Music Review | Art, stories and advice

Upbeat, inspiring and truly relatable!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Hi Kissing Thieves, welcome to LA Music Review! Tell us a little bit about you and your music?

We’re Kissing Thieves, a folk rock band from Bellingham, WA.

(Same hometown as Death Cab for Cutie!) Our music carries themes of self-discovery and empowerment, with rich melodies, alluring vocals, and dreamy guitars.

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?

Released July 25, 2023. There is a beloved quote by Saint Francis of Assisi: “Make me an instrument.” His prayer really struck us, so we ran with it and took it up a notch: “Make me an instrument… and play me louder.” It’s a soulful request asking life to make the most of us while we’re here; to make use of everything we’ve got.

What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

Play Me Louder is a calling in of joy, of purpose, of wanting to live a big life and make a big noise.

We’re not here to play small. This song is an invitation to take up space. We hope it encourages you to let go, let your soul sing, and worry not of the critics or consequences.

What is your favorite part of this body of work?

We love that the lyrics are spiritual yet relatable.

The song itself is quite intimate and vulnerable (true to form), which could have easily elicited a quiet, shy song that wanted to hide. But we followed the guidance of the lyrics and brought the song itself into the light, with energetic rhythm and drums that made it come alive with a joyous sound that practically begs to be loud.

Anything else we should know about it? Upcoming events?

Yes, we’re stoked to release our next single, Faded Underwear, in fall of 2023. We’ve also started performing live acoustic shows at various venues and events in WA State.
