LA Music Review | Art, stories and advice

Heartfelt, romantic and truly captivating!

Hi Ian Rey, welcome to LA Music Review! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

I’m Ian Rey, 27 years old, a songwriter from Bacolod City, but currently residing in Cebu City, Philippines. I started writing songs when I was 13, and it became my hobby. I stopped writing songs for a few years and focused on playing the violin at our church. Last year, I got inspired by a friend to write again, and now I can’t stop.

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?

Released on April 1, 2022. This was written 2 days after Typhoon Odette (last December 2021) hit the Philippines.

I was living alone in this city and actually realized a lot things. I made the lyrics like I was not alone, because I wished I was not alone when the typhoon happened.

What is your vision for this song? What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

I want for people to hear it too, that even…

when something good or bad is happening, it won’t matter unless you’re with your loved ones or with someone very close to you.

I didn’t expect actually for this song to be included on Fresh Finds Philippines April last year.

What is your favorite part of the song?

The lyrics and the hook 🙂

Sa t’wing nakikita ka
Ngiti ay ‘di mapigilan
‘Pag minsa’y kasama ka
Dibdib parang ‘di makahinga

Pag-ibig na ba ito?
Tanong ng pusong lito
‘Di maintindihan
Ako’y nababaliw na sa iyo

Hindi ko alam kung bakit kaya ako
Baliw na baliw sa iyo
Sa lahat ng oras na kasama kita
Bawat minuto ay mahalaga

Ano kaya ang ‘yong mararamdaman
‘Pag sinabi kong mahal kita?
Sana ay pagbigyan mo naman
Itong aking nararamdaman

That this song only has 4 chords and just repeats all throughout the song. What’s fascinating is I wrote this at the time we don’t have electricity.

Anything else we should know about? Future releases?

I recently released an acoustic version of Unless. I’ll be releasing my second EP this mid-year.
