Hi Lance, welcome to LA Music Review! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

I’m Lance Melgarejo, a Filipino singer-songwriter in the genre of rock, country, and blues.

I love telling stories, and music is my outlet. That’s why all of my songs have stories shared as creatively as possible.

I’ve already performed on open mics in various restaurants in Mandaluyong City, Antipolo City, and Angono, Rizal.

My songwriting and guitar techniques were mainly influenced by the following artists: Keith UrbanJohn MayerMaddie & TaeSam Hunt, and Brett Young. I like to put little twists in my songs/stories because it makes my songs more interesting!

My songs are not necessarily my stories, but most of it are inspired by my own. It’s a great feeling to sing to an audience…

… and they’ll be able to relate to it when they hear your song. It’s the connection—that’s the magic of music.

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?

Released on May 17, 2023. When I wrote this song, I was fond of a Keith Urban song called “Same Heart,” which tells a story about someone trying to change everything in their life because they want to move on from a lover from the past. Similarly, another song from Urban called “Change Your Mind” has a similar theme – both are from the devastation caused by a breakup they regret. So, I made a song that is related to this theme.

“Be My Girl” is a song that tells the story about the other side of the fence – the one that has been watching over their past lover change everything in their life to try to forget him, but in the end, the past lover cannot deny that a piece of them still thirsts for the love that they chose to end.

I’m really happy that this track made it to Spotify’s Fresh Finds Philippines.

What is your vision for this song? What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

My vision for this project is very ambitious. My music library consists of very chill songs. Most of them are acoustic. That’s because I did not have enough equipment and the right skills to produce a full-band track.

But since I started performing live, I sometimes get frustrated that all my songs are acoustic and I don’t have enough upbeat songs to entertain the audience. “Be My Girl” solves that problem because it’s my first full-band song.

The message is you can try to forget someone and change everything in your life. If they make you feel happy, they are book marked. A piece of you will still long for them because they were significant in your life.

What is your favorite part of this body of work?

I love the lyrics and how my song exudes confidence. It acknowledges the efforts of the persona’s past lover to make a new world. But the persona knows that they loved them right enough that they’d be unforgettable.

You can try to make a new world
But it won’t change a thing
‘Cause you’ll always be my girl

Also, the fact that the persona was willing to give it another shot is very interesting. You wouldn’t normally want to get back with someone whose been trying to move on because they might just be having a relapse. But I think in this case, it’s very romantic. It fits the overall vibe of the song.

Anything else we should know about it? Future releases? Upcoming events?

This song, “Be My Girl,” along with my past release, “Long Way,” will be part of the album I’ll be releasing soon. I have no upcoming events yet but I post music content on my Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook page regularly. So please stay updated.
